Midsummer's Day: a conundrum

AliceWhite_01Hey, here’s a question for you:  Why, in the northern hemisphere, do we call 21st June ‘Midsummer’s Day’ when 21st June actually marks ‘the start of Summer’?  Aha…

Did you know that in meteororololololgical terms Spring begins on 1st March, Summer on 1st June, Autumn – 1st September and Winter – 1st December?  Those dates make more sense to me in terms of what the weather is actually doing, certainly where I live, and in my own mind this is closer to how I think of the year. (That still doesn’t make ‘Midsummer’s‘ day on 21st June mind you).  Confusing, innit?

Well, just who went and confused things by willy nilly declaring the start of the seasons as the 21st of March, June, September and December?  I bet it was those pesky Christians (no hate mail please – to all intents and purposes I’m one of them …which doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m currently a fully paid-up member of the club).   If you know the answer, do tell.

Happy Fathers’ Day to all the Dads out there.  If you haven’t already, check out the videos I posted yesterday:  A funny (and wincingly painful) clip from the brilliant Paul Merton’s trip to India, and maybe my favourite ad of all time (well…so far), the Guinness surfers and white horses ad.

Fathers' Day – Guinness Ad

I’m posting two videos in honour of Father’s Day tomorrow:

Here is the Guinness ‘White Horses’ advertisement – voted the Best Ad of All Time in a 2002 poll conducted by Channel 4 and The Sunday Times. It was also a worthy multi award winner, chalking up more industry awards than any other ad in 2009.  It’s ten years old therefore and in my mind is still a hard one to beat.

The other video is an unmissable scene from the Paul Merton in India series on Channel 5 (one to make the guys wince as they laugh).

Happy Fathers’ Day to all the Dads out there!

Nice News

Zafar AlamLast year I made a point of writing a diary entry here at home for every single day of the year, including our local weather and an international news story each day.  I wanted to record, in some detail, not just my life but also the world as it was in 2008.  Finding a news article to include every day wasn’t hard. Finding a positive news article (which is what I preferred to focus on) was substantially harder.

I don’t know if I’ll be doing the same thing this year because it sometimes took rather more time than I would have liked to do a diary entry each day.  However, after a year of trawling through the news I’m clearly in the habit now.   Today’s happy article wasn’t hard to find.  It’s the story of Zafar Alam, Bangladesh’s first surfer and if you want to feel uplifted go check it out at the \BBC News website. (Ignore the obligatory  ‘green schmean’ wiffle at the end about rising sea levels and focus on what is essentially a nice news story).
