Here’s an idea

What’s with this weather? What’s with my body? I’m freezing! Where are the curtains I ordered (in September)? I want my curtains so that I can shut out the weather. I want to cocoon myself in a centrally heated, thick (heavily interlined) curtained house. No, hang on. Scratch that. Actually I want to hibernate. Yes, that would be better. Why can’t humans hibernate? Avoid the cold and the damp altogether, avoid S.A.D. syndrome, avoid over-eating starch because it temporarily makes you feel better but leaves you feeling and looking like a little human butterball by the Spring.

Wake me up when it’s Spring, would you?

Photos with a wow factor

I know I’m no Annie Leibowitz (more’s the pity) but I plug away at my love of photography, gradually learning more and slowly seeing improvements in my art.  It’s hard not to compare yourself to others however and there are those even on Flickr whose work I just find totally enchanting (here ) or that simply blows me away (here and here) .  Best keep your head down and plug on for fear of being totally discouraged, I think.

Sometimes however, I come across a photo that has such a wow factor that it makes me think ‘that’s it’.  Pack away all the gear because that is incredible and probably, for me, totally unattainable.

Jose Luis Rodriguez has just won first prize in this year’s Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.  This was a shot that apparently took him years to plan and that he had even sketched out on paper beforehand.  The planning shows.  If I attempted this I’d get a blur of fur as the wolf disappeared out of shot.  Jose’s shot is so crystal clear, well lit and well timed that it looks just like a storybook illustration brought to life.  Hats off to Sr. Rodriguez, he’s a worthy winner.

Poignant

I find this photo, on the REUTERS site today, very poignant yet lovely. Anyone with pets knows that there are times when the comfort they provide is totally beyond measure.

lovelyblogawardGoodness me, I’m editing this entry, late in the day because I have three thank yous that I really need to say. I’ve just noticed that Slamdunk has highlighted my photo comp, I was very remiss yesterday for not thanking my dear and long-term blogging buddy Laura (at Snerkology) for doing likewise and Amanda at Teasingly Diverse has also promoted my cause.  You’re all very kind.  Thanks too to Amanda for giving me this Award.  I should now hand it on to 15 other people.  I hope you don’t mind if I take a while to ponder this one.  I have a hospital appointment tomorrow and I’m afraid I’m already preoccupied and stewing about it.  (I keep saying that I must have been a cat or a dog in a former life because I have an innate fear of anyone in a white coat).  Anyway, especially in my ‘wobbly’ frame of mind today, I’m really touched by bloggy friends who have taken the time to think of me.  🙂

Gathering momentum

I feel us gathering momentum as a little design team and I’ve been busy on more art and photography this morning, specifically today putting up a new piece by my older daughter (below).  I know that lots of you out there have young children so I just thought I’d remind you that there is some original artwork to see over at my Art and Design site, some perfect for children.

The response to my competition, both here and by email has so far has been good but we’re not exactly up at lottery standards (not that I ever thought we would be)!  All I can say is, the odds of winning are therefore pretty good and I wanted to thank those who have already entered for your support and enthusiam.  For that reason alone, you’re all winners to me.

Baby seals

Sorry this note is so perfunctory – having whiled away the morning ‘fiddling’ on arty stuff, I’ve just realised that we have absolutely nada, zippo, zilch to eat in the house so getting myself to the shop PDQ could be useful for, ooh, things like lunch, and dinner.   🙂

'In a word' and Saturday Snapshots

It’s a ‘twofer’ day around here today (two entries for the price of one) – an ‘In a word’ meme from Joanna and Saturday Snapshots from Amanda.

First off…

I discovered from taking part in the last meme, passed to me by Joanna at The Fifty Factor, that I really like talking about myself!  Now there’s a surprise!  Joanna’s come up trumps again, this time with an award/ meme passed on from Holly Dietor of Your Mother Knows But Won’t Tell You.  (‘HDoYMKBWTY’ makes me think that I should really come up with a very much better name for this blog that started as ‘an experiment’ about a year ago now).

This meme requires one word answers to the following list of questions.  So without further ado…

1. Where is your cell phone? Handbag
2. Your hair?

3. Your mother?
Heaven
4. Your father?

5. Your favorite food?

13. Where were you last night? Home

14. Something that you aren’t?

15. Muffins? Scones

16. Wish list item?

17. Where did you grow up?

18. Last thing you did? Showered
19. What are you wearing? Clothes

20. Your TV?

34. One person who emails me regularly?
Daughter
35. Favorite place to eat?
Home

It was quite telling to think of some of those, so thanks for that Joanna.  Let me know if you’d like the flame passed to you.  I’d love to see your one word answers.

Now for Saturday Snapshots.  It’s the fourth photo from my fourth folder, with an explanation to follow:

Smart

It’s my car – a little Smart cabriolet.  I lost my confidence with driving post stroke so for me the smaller the car, the better.  I always wanted a soft top so when it came time to change my car and this little Smart cabriolet was on the forecourt, available to drive away (very unusual here), it just seemed made for me.  I love the design of this car – it reminds me of a baby’s bootee!

The location probably looks very arty.  It was photographed outside an old holiday camp on the island’s stunningly beautiful north coast.  The camp shut down many years ago and is now crumbling and vandalised while developers, conservationists and our parliament continually argue about what should be done with it.  (We don’t believe in making hasty decisions here).

…………………………………………..

And finally (I love the ability, in my blog, to start not only a sentence with the word ‘and’ but also a whole paragraph)

And finally…please don’t forget!!!

Art Comp

For details of how to enter, for the chance to win framed artwork plus a designer tee shirt, please visit my last blog entry or just click here.  Bonne chance, mes amis.  🙂
